A quick look at the city of Mt Gambier
Population 25,000 Location - on the Princes highway,
5 hour drive from Melbourne and about 4 hours from Adelaide.
Mt Gambier is not considered to be a tourist destination
but is a great place for tourists to visit. Located in the
middle of Australia's premier wine region and surrounded
by some fascinating little seaside villages and lots of
interesting geology the city is an ideal choice for centered
tour, Mount Gambier has an abundance of reasonable price
accommodation and you can take day trips to the wineries
in the Coonawarra region, or to the seaside resorts of Port
Macdonald or Beachport or look at some of the interesting
caves and sink holes that surround the region
Mt Gambier is primarily a service centre for the agricultural,
wine and timber industries and so it has all the resources
to service this population with theatres, cinema's, hotels,
restaurants, clubs and numerous sporting facilities etc
plus a lively retail sector.
The main attractions of the city are the scenic Blue Lake
which is located almost in the centre of the city , the
surrounding wine regions which are about 30 kms from Mt
Gambier and the caves and sinkholes are literally everywhere
A visit to the Lady Nelson visitor information centre is
the best place to start
