The Moyne River
A walk along
the Moyne river is one of the essential things do do when
you visit Port Fairy.
Picture postcard views of the historic fishing village can
be seen from the eastern side of the river (remember to bring
your camera).
There is quite a good picnic area on this side of the river
which is close to the original Port Fairy coastal defence
battery which was put in place in the 1870's to defend the
town from a possible Russian invasion
King George Square
A great
place to start your exploration of Port Fairy with many of
the townships historic landmarks within a few hundred metres,
including the Customs House ( which is now a museum) the original
court house and Captain Mills Cottage.
Wisharts Seafood at the Wharf is a popular spot for fish and
chips, there is also a restaurant attached to the take away
business where you can sit down and have a meal. |
Griffiths Island
A visit
to the to the mouth of the Moyne river and the site of Port
Fairy's first settlement. The foundations of the early whaling
station are still visible and quite close to the Griffiths
Island light house. There is a large mutton bird colony on
the island and from December to April you can see the birds
returning to their nests at dusk each night.
