| History - Built in 1858 by Joseph Dobson and known as Dobsons Family Hotel, at the time was one of the finest buildings in the township. Joseph Dobson, was a carpenter by trade and a large gregarious Yorkshireman who loved a pint. He had previously built the first Hotel in Warrnambool (1854) The Royal Archer, and was well known for his hospitality and interest in civic affairs. Financial problems forced the sale of the hotel in 1867 and it was renamed the Victoria Hotel. It remained substantially unaltered for the next 100 years until the 1970's when at the height of the pub entertainment boom the hotel was renovated and modernised with the addition of a large entertainment venue Falling patronage and the introduction of drink driving laws in the early 1990's forced the scaling back of the pub. Meals at the "Vic" are typical country pub style cooking, with generous servings and an uncomplicated menu. The lunch menu is particularly popular with nothing over $7.00 and attracts quite a few locals, especially on Thursdays and Fridays, where lunch at the Vic is somewhat of a tradition for many local workers.
|
Rooms at the "Vic" are on the second floor and are traditional pub style accommodation with twin beds and a wardrobe (doubles in some rooms) and shared toilet and bathroom facilities at the end of the hallway. A shared kitchen facility and lounge has been added in recent times to provide for an increasing number of backpackers . |
